GPC SL2 Anti Collision Barriers

Machine Design

Project Overview

Linear Engineering developed and designed a unique solution for a long travel anti-collision barrier system at Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) RG Tanna Coal Terminal, for Shiploader No.2. Technical development of the design included FE Analysis.

Overview

Project Overview

GPC required long travel anti-collision barriers to mitigate identified risks associated with collision on the main wharf rails. Whilst already having existing systems in place, including hydraulic buffers and LiDAR systems, the anti-collision barriers provide a physical, safety rated barrier that further protect equipment and personnel. Crucial to the success of the project, Linear had to understand the needs of various stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of a new system within existing infrastructure.

Linear Engineering completed the following tasks as a part of the project:

  • Concept development with multiple stakeholder reviews
  • HAZOP workshop of the preferred concept design
  • FE Analysis of the selected design and immediate surrounding infrastructure
  • Detail design of new boarding stairs to accompany the overall project delivery of anti collision barrier design
  • Functional descriptions of the new system
The Challenge

The Challenge

Linear faced many design challenges throughout the project that were generally related to the Brownfield nature of the project. It was imperative the engineers and designers understood the existing functionality of the machine, as well as, other surrounding day-to-day operations on the wharf. Development of “protection envelopes” for the barriers were critical to the project and required significant stakeholder liaison. Other factors that impacted the design included:

  • The existing design of the SL2 boarding stairs (this was eventually redesigned in this project also to provide safer access to the machine for personnel)
  • Interface with existing wharf end-of-travel buffers
  • SL2 tripper limitations
  • SL2 storm park locations and methodology
The Solution

The Solution

Linear were distinctively positioned to face these challenges and provide ideal solutions, which included:

  • FE analysis of the existing SL2 tripper
  • Inventor simulation of the anti-collision barrier actuating mechanism
  • Engineering and shop detail drawings for the new SL2 boarding stairs
  • Engineering and shop detail drawings for the anti-collision barriers
  • Functional Description of the anti-collision barriers
