Project Overview

Linear Engineering was engaged by Rio Tinto Yarwun to provide its materials handling expertise to the Hydrate Stockpile Upgrade.

Overview

Project Overview

The project required Linear Engineering to detail design the conveyors and transfers within the constraints of a brownfield site.  The design included:

  • Two elevated conveyors
  • Western transfer tower
  • 20 tonne surge bin and feeder
  • 4 plough stations
  • Bypass chute to bulk reclaim feeder
The Challenge

The Challenge

The conveyors and transfers had to be designed within tight timeframes to meet the project schedule.  The alumina hydrate chute designs were optimised using Discrete Element Analysis (DEM) to simulate transfers and bin/feeder behaviour.

The design addressed the challenges of a brownfield site including

  • Unique tower design to avoid critical in-ground cooling water piping
  • Design for preassembly to enable construction within aggressive shutdown duration
The Solution

The Solution

Linear supported the Rio Tinto project and team by providing a design that integrated with the brownfield site.  The support continued with the Linear team assisting with:

  • Procurement
  • Shop detailing
  • Commissioning
  • Ops Readiness
